In 2006 I graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Madison and quickly found myself working in the fitness industry. I spent several years working in big box gyms in Wisconsin, with a brief stint with University of Wisconsin strength and conditioning. It was during my time in these gyms that I was originally introduced to CrossFit. Having an athletic background I jumped in head first only to find myself quickly humbled by not only the workouts, but the vast amount of knowledge and discipline I needed to train and coach the moves involved. In 2009 when I moved to Colorado I began working at yet another big box gym, but this time with the dream of bringing my passion for CrossFit to the forefront.
In December 2010 Trailhead CrossFit was born. It has been my goal to change the lives of those who work with me by not only introducing them to a new type of fitness, but to make them stronger both physically and mentally. CrossFit is constantly evolving and as such, I, as a coach, am constantly learning new things and bringing these into the class environment. Trailhead CrossFit was built, not for myself as a profession, but more for my clients; a place where they can focus on their fitness and improve the CrossFit community. Driven solely by the improvements of my members, I push everyday to help them become the best they can be, and in turn, they push right back challenging me to become a better coach. We are CrossFit…are you?

CrossFit Kids
I am a Colorado native, born and raised in Golden. I am married to Perry Sawano and have three children; Cameron, Logan and Raegan. Since childhood, I struggled with my weight, and like so many others, I tried countless “get-fit-quick” fixes, “do-it-yourself” programs and fitness “gadgets.” Realizing I needed something more, I decided to join a gym, and even better, I decided to sign up my entire family because I thought it was something we could enjoy doing together.
It was at the gym that I met Brian Wesner. Seeing the progress Brian was making with the people he worked with at the gym, I decided to hire him as a personal trainer for my son Logan, but just for my son, because of course I figured I could do it all on my own. After watching Brian work with Logan, and seeing the progress they were making, I decided I would give it a try, since as usual I wasn’t making progress on my own. After only a few workouts with Brian, and the CrossFit method of training, I was seeing results, and for the first time in my life, I was hooked! Brian opened Trailhead CrossFit in 2010, and there, I continued to train hard, learn more, and achieve goals that made me realize I wanted to help other people change their lives too. I wanted to help people realize that no matter their age, or fitness level they could do it!
In May of 2011 I received my Level 1 Certification in CrossFit, and soon thereafter, became certified in CrossFit for Kids. Having over 20 years experience in pediatrics, and seeing the rise in childhood obesity, I am passionate about teaching kids and their families the importance of fitness and nutrition. CrossFit changed my life. I have achieved things I never thought possible and I feel healthier and stronger than I have ever felt before. CrossFit is a community; a fellowship of people of all ages, of diverse backgrounds, who will sweat with you, reach goals with you, and are there to pick you up when you fall. I challenge you to give CrossFit a try, you won’t regret it!

I accidentally changed my life with Crossfit.
In 2009 I was working with a personal trainer in a big box gym and spending an outrageous amount of time on an elliptical to prepare for my wedding. Post-wedding, when I could no longer justify the expense of one-on-one attention in the gym, I became bored with my routine and jumped at the chance to sign up for a group class…I had no idea what I was in for. This decision was made with no research and little forethought, but it was one of my best so far.
Enter Crossfit. The first workout crushed me, I was shocked that the hours of cardio I had logged every week didn’t help me perform what had seemed like a simple task (weighted burpees – get on the ground; get off the ground while holding very small dumbbells). My introduction to Crossfit callously trampled my ego and pointed out that I was not fit, but I could be. I was hooked and spent the next couple years following Brian through a couple different big box gyms to Trailhead.
In late 2011 I became Level 1 Certified Trainer and began coaching in early 2012. It is rewarding to work hard in the gym everyday and be able to be proud of what you can accomplish, but helping other people do things they can be proud of is even more rewarding. Our community inspires (and challenges) me to work harder every day, and I can only hope to return the favor.
